7.02 Great Speeches For the first half of this course we have looked at historical and often inspiring formal speeches those which you have been asked to deliver in this course. There is now the domain of thought-leaders offering their insights in less formal settings such as TED Talks. Due to the Internets audience reach many of these thought-leaders are leaving their mark in profound ways. Please review the video below and tell us what if anything can be gleaned from Brene Browns TED Talk on the concept of vulnerability as it relates to public speaking.

5-PAGE ESSAY DUE: Tues. May 11 2021 Write a single coherent essay (including an appropriate introduction and conclusion) of 1 -1 300 words (roughly five standard pages) on the following topic. Write your essay in such a way that its contents would be accessible to a typical college student who has never taken a course in Philosophy. Please be sure to address every portion of the assignment. Your essay must be submitted as a Word document (preferred) or PDF. The text must be in no less than 12-point font double-spaced and have at least one-inch margins (left right top and bottom). The print must be easily legible. Proof read your work to be sure that it is free from grammatical spelling editing and typographical errors. Include a bibliography or works cited page at the end of your essay. In addition to providing a bibliography or works cited page be sure to properly document and cite any material appearing in your essay that you did not come up with entirely on your own. Please see your syllabus for a description of the policies for this course concerning plagiarism. Your essay will be graded on the clarity and depth of thought it represents as well as on the extent to which it conforms to the standards of good philosophical writing. Please see your syllabus for a description of the policies for this course concerning late essays. (Prompt) Provide your own (original) analysis of a concept of general philosophical interest. Defend your analysis against the objection that it is too narrow (that what you have maintained to be necessary conditions really arent necessary conditions) and against the objection that it is too broad (that what you have maintained to be sufficient conditions really arent sufficient conditions) by considering at least two carefully chosen putative counter-examples. (A counter-example to an analysis is an example that shows that the analysis is wrong.) Prior to providing and defending your analysis present and explain what philosophers mean by conceptual analysis. Present and explain The Tripartite Theory of Knowledge as an example of conceptual analysis. Be sure to explain what a concept is what it is for a condition to be a necessary condition for the proper application of a concept what it is for a condition to be a sufficient for the proper application of a concept and what it is for a set of conditions to be jointly sufficient for the proper application of a concept. Some Formal Definitions A concept is a property as thought about by competent speakers of a language; a general idea that competent speakers of a language share in virtue of being competent speakers of the same language. An analysis of a concept is a specification of the necessary and sufficient conditions for the proper application of that concept to a thing. A condition is a necessary condition for the proper application of a concept to a thing if and only if that condition must be satisfied by that thing for the concept to properly apply to it. A condition is a sufficient condition for the proper application of a concept to a thing if and only if were that condition satisfied by that thing no further condition would need to be satisfied for the concept to properly apply to it. A set of conditions are jointly sufficient for the proper application of a concept to a thing if and only if were that set of conditions satisfied no further condition would need to be satisfied for the concept to properly apply to it. Some Examples of Concepts of General Philosophical Interest Personal Independence Patriotism Respect Music Love Hate Friendship Sexual Activity Note: You need not choose to analyze a concept from this list. You may do so or you may choose to analyze some other concept of general philosophical interest.
